Appling County Elementary School enjoyed a Lab day
The 5th grade classes at Appling County Elementary School recently enjoyed a Lab day where parent volunteers came and assisted with experiments involving Earth Structures and Changes. The students created a model of the earth structure using an oreo, chocolate syrup and MM’s. The crust of the earth is represented by the cookie, the cream represents the mantle, the syrup represents the outer core and the MM represented the inner core. They used graham crackers and icing to model plate tectonics, showing the effects of divergent, convergent, folded mountains and transforming plate boundaries. They modeled the effects of weathering, erosion and deposition. They even built a mountain and observed what happened with the destructive forces of weathering by rain, rivers and a glacier! The students also made sand dunes and observed the destructive/constructive forces of wind. Thank you to our volunteers for helping and donating their time! The students enjoyed a STEMulating time!!!
