District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces the conviction and sentence of 43 year old
Thelonious Maurice Smith of Savannah in Appling County Superior Court. A jury was
chosen on Monday, November 14, 2016 and heard evidence on Tuesday, November 15,
2016 before returning a verdict of guilty for one count of Possession of Cocaine with
Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of a Schedule II
Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute.
The charges stem from a December 2015 traffic stop of Smith and two co-defendants on
Tippins Street in Baxley. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 54 individual
bags of cocaine, as well as marijuana, methamphetamine and Oxycontin.
Superior Court Judge Roger Lane presided over the case and sentenced Smith as a
recidivist on Friday, November 18, 2016 to serve ten years in prison followed by ten years
on probation. Smith was also ordered to pay a $2500 fine, waive his 4th amendment rights,
and completed a substance abuse evaluation and follow any treatment deemed necessary.
